The Vanderbilt Newport Wedding | An Intimate Newport, Rhode Island Celebration

The Vanderbilt Newport Wedding

If you are dreaming of a romantic, historic, and luxurious coastal celebration, The Vanderbilt Newport wedding experience is truly unlike anything else. Nestled in the heart of downtown Newport, Rhode Island, this iconic mansion blends Gilded Age elegance with modern design, creating the perfect setting for an intimate wedding filled with character, history, and charm.

Kat and Nathan’s love story is deeply tied to Newport. Many of the early days of their relationship were spent exploring this stunning seaside town, and they even got engaged here. There could not have been a more meaningful place to host their wedding day.

Why The Vanderbilt Is a Dream Newport Wedding Venue

The Vanderbilt Newport is one of the most iconic mansion venues on the East Coast. Originally built in 1908 by Gwynne Vanderbilt, this Georgian-style estate carries the legacy of the Vanderbilt family, who also built The Breakers and Marble House, two of Newport’s most famous Gilded Age mansions.

Today, the mansion has been transformed into a luxury hotel and wedding venue while preserving its historic architecture and handcrafted details. It perfectly blends old-world elegance with bold, modern design. The hotel aims to keep the wanderlust and rebellious spirit of Alfred Vanderbilt alive by embracing bold colors and textures. Inside, couples will find:

  • Stylish, reimagined guest rooms and suites
  • Private reception spaces for intimate celebrations
  • Manicured gardens alongisde a charming pool
  • A rooftop overlooking downtown Newport and the waterfront
  • Unique reception rooms like The Victory Room, Snooker Room, Dining Room, and Conservatory

For larger events, couples can even rent the entire mansion, offering total privacy, making the Vanderbilt Newport wedding experience even more unforgettable.

Getting Ready in Historic Downtown Newport

Kat and Nathan began their wedding day by getting ready together at the Marshall Slocum Inn, a historic boutique hotel in downtown Newport. The inn is a converted Victorian home that was built in 1855 and has been thoughtfully designed to preserve the charm and beauty of colonial heritage. The space is filled with antique furnishings, original hardwood floors, and warm, inviting tones that reflect Newport’s timeless character.

They chose to stay in the Library Room, a room decorated with sailing artwork, a black stone fireplace, and a bookshelf filled with manuscripts and antiques. I absolutely adore it when couples choose to get ready for their wedding day together. There is something so intimate about helping each other get dressed for one of the most memorable days of their life. One of the most beautiful parts of the morning was how they dressed each other, Kat adjusting Nathan’s tie, Nathan zipping Kat’s dress, and slipping on her shoes. It was the perfect calm way to begin their wedding day.

After portraits inside the inn, we took some more outside, enjoying the colonial-style porch and quiet yard. Late September in Newport gave us the best of both seasons: lingering blooms from summer and the first autumn leaves beginning to fall.

Oceanfront Vows at Brenton Point State Park

Before the Vanderbilt Newport wedding celebration began, Kat and Nathan exchanged vows at an intimate ceremony at Brenton Point State Park. Located along Ocean Drive, occupying the former grounds of one of Newport’s grandest estates, the park overlooks Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, offering sweeping coastal views and dramatic rocky shoreline scenery. They incorporated a handfasting ceremony as ocean waves crashed on the rocks below. The overcast sky created soft, moody light that perfectly complemented their antique and vintage-inspired aesthetic.

After the ceremony and photos with their guests, we wandered away from the crowd so the couple could have time just for themselves. This quiet space allowed them to slow down, breathe, and truly soak in the moment they had just shared. Brenton Point has so many beautiful portrait locations. We took portraits near the water’s edge and then wandered along the park’s winding paths. I documented Kat and Nathan in rich green fields surrounded by lush beach foliage, historic stone walls, and pops of yellow flowers scattered throughout the landscape. It was so special to take our time during these portraits, letting moments unfold naturally. They were completely wrapped up in each other, simply happy to be together in one of their favorite places in the world.

The Vanderbilt Newport Wedding Portraits

Before we joined the guests for dinner at The Vanderbilt Newport wedding, we explored the mansion for more portraits inside the historic space. We ventured up to the rooftop and took in sweeping views of downtown Newport and the nearby waterfront before wandering through the hotel’s many uniquely designed rooms. Each space felt completely different, layered with restored vintage elements and bold design details.

We photographed in the Pool Room, a dramatic space entirely illuminated in red light that created an artistic, cinematic mood. We also spent time in the Parlor Room, where yellow walls were accented with wallpaper featuring a painted blue-and-white nature scene. The room included a historic fireplace, a vintage chess table, and even a bar hidden behind a section of wallpaper, such a fun, unexpected detail. As we explored the fairytale-like mansion, it truly felt as though we had stepped back into another era, where history, romance, and modern elegance all intertwined.

An Intimate Conservatory Reception at The Vanderbilt

Since Kat and Nathan planned an intimate celebration, they chose the Conservatory for their Vanderbilt Newport weddingreception. The Conservatory is a stunning, glass-walled tea room with an entire wall of windows overlooking the mansion’s gardens, allowing natural light to pour in while keeping the atmosphere cozy and private. The mostly white space is accented with checkered tile floors, while dark green and white striped fabric is loosely draped across the ceiling, paired with elegant round light fixtures and hanging greenery.

A long table was set in the center of the room, creating a warm and communal dining experience. Each place setting featured an illustrated menu designed specifically for the celebration. Tall candlesticks lined the middle of the table, casting a delicate, golden glow as the sun began to set, while twinkle lights scattered throughout the space added a whimsical, romantic feel.

The culinary experience was just as memorable as the setting. Every dish was made in-house by The Vanderbilt’s expert culinary team using fresh, local ingredients. Their dining team works closely with couples to craft custom menus based on what is in season in New England, making The Vanderbilt Newport wedding experience unique. Kat and Nathan’s menu featured honeynut squash to start, an autumn harvest-inspired filet mignon dinner, and sticky toffee pudding for dessert, the perfect cozy yet elegant ending to their evening.
