The Lakehouse Halifax MA at a Glance

The Lakehouse sits right on the water at 550 Monponsett St in Halifax, MA, about 45 minutes from Boston, and the whole waterfront property is yours for the day. It hosts 50 to 300 guests, with 500 feet of shoreline, a dock, stone patios and gardens to explore.

You can say your vows on the lakeside ceremony patio or inside the ballroom facing floor to ceiling windows, then head to the sunroom or courtyard for cocktail hour. There are two getting-ready suites on site (hair and makeup happen off site), food and drinks are handled in house, and Saphire Event Group’s coordinators are there all day. If your guests are traveling in, there are plenty of highly rated hotels 15 to 20 minutes away.

What The Lakehouse Is Like

I loved everything about The Lakehouse! The inside of the venue has an open floor plan with clean, modern architecture. All of the walls are painted white or neutral colors, and the massive ballroom has floor to ceiling windows overlooking the lake. The floors and accent colors are soft, warm and natural, and the decor is tasteful and full of organic textures. The whole space feels Mediterranean inspired, blending a coastal feel with refined elegance.

The outdoor spaces are even more incredible. The pinnacle of the venue is the sprawling ceremony location overlooking West Lake, and it was specially designed to face southwest. That one detail makes a huge difference for your photos, and I’ll explain why below.

The Bridal Suite and Getting-Ready Spaces

The Lakehouse has two separate getting-ready suites, and both are spacious and filled with natural light. Natural light is so important for light, elegant getting-ready photos. The suites are separate from each other, so you won’t accidentally run into each other before you’re ready.

The decor in both suites is light, neutral and tasteful, and it doesn’t distract from your photos. At some venues the furniture is so distracting that I feel like I need to rearrange the whole room before I can capture bridal portraits. Not here! The white couch and natural decor complement the composition of the photos perfectly. The bridal suite also opens onto a private patio surrounded by trees and hydrangeas, which is one of my favorite spots on the whole property (more on that below).

One thing to know: hair and makeup must be done off site, and the venue typically lets you arrive 90 minutes before the ceremony. I share how to plan around that in the timeline tips below.

Ceremony Options at The Lakehouse

The outdoor lakeside ceremony

Katerina and Glenn had their ceremony outside overlooking the water, and the light was perfect. Outside will always be my top pick here, because the panoramic lake views are impossible to beat. The ceremony patio faces southwest, so you’ll never be squinting into harsh sun, and your guests won’t be blinded by the sun behind you either.

The only challenge is wind. On a windy day, your DJ will need to be ready to handle wind on the officiant’s and couple’s microphones. It’s also something to think about when choosing your hairstyle, since tendrils can be tricky to manage at windy locations.

The indoor ballroom ceremony

The Lakehouse also has a stunning indoor ceremony option. An indoor ceremony takes place in the ballroom, facing the floor to ceiling windows, so your guests still get to enjoy the lake views.

Cocktail Hour and Reception Spaces

For an indoor ceremony to work, a venue needs a separate cocktail hour space so guests can move there while the staff transforms the ceremony space into your reception. The Lakehouse has the perfect spot for this: the sunroom, a warm, elevated lounge just steps away where the bar and fireplace are. There’s also a courtyard for an indoor-outdoor cocktail hour. Once the reception begins, the doors open and the spaces flow together into one open floor plan.

After dark, the ballroom is just as good for photos. The bright white walls are perfect for using flash. Darker or wooden buildings are much harder to work with, because the dark color eats up the light from the flash, and light bouncing off warm wood can cast unflattering orange tones onto everyone. At The Lakehouse, flash bounces effortlessly off the white walls and creates a flattering glow on everyone inside. That means stunning, true to color reception photos.

Is There a Good Rain Plan at The Lakehouse?

Yes! The Lakehouse has a great plan B. If you’re worried about wind or the weather doesn’t cooperate, your ceremony moves into the ballroom, still facing the lake through those floor to ceiling windows. Guests head to the sunroom for cocktail hour while the team flips the room for your reception, so everyone moves easily from one space to the next.

There are also plenty of beautiful spots to take photos inside, from the bright getting-ready suites to the bar and the ballroom windows. And the Saphire Event Group team keeps a close eye on the forecast all day. At Katerina and Glenn’s wedding, the coordinators were monitoring the weather to make sure it was safe to have the ceremony outside and that guests would stay dry. During couple portraits, when rain was close, they warned us, so we knew to work quickly and prioritize the photos that mattered most to the couple. Those rain clouds made the sunset sky even more dramatic!

My Favorite Photo Spots at The Lakehouse

Every outdoor space here is perfect for photos: the stone patios, the grass overlooking the lake, even the main entrance. But these are the spots I’d tell every couple not to miss.

The dock at sunset

The dock overlooking the lake is my absolute favorite photo location at The Lakehouse. Sunset is the best time for photos here, because the golden hour glow reflects beautifully off the lake’s calm water.

The private hydrangea patio

This is the hidden gem. The private patio outside the bridal suite is surrounded by trees and hydrangeas, so it’s completely hidden. The hydrangeas are a burnt pink color and are in peak bloom in September. It’s the perfect spot for a first touch, a first look, or couple portraits before the ceremony so guests don’t see you early. It’s also great for bridal portraits and family photos before your partner sees you.

For Katerina and Glenn’s wedding, we did their first touch here. If you haven’t heard of a first touch, it’s a sweet in-between for couples who want a quiet moment together before the ceremony but still want to see each other for the first time at the aisle. We also took Katerina’s bridal portraits, her bridesmaid photos and her family portraits here before the ceremony, since they didn’t do a first look.

The bar

The bar is gorgeous, and before guests arrive it makes a stunning portrait location. It matches the light interior of the venue, with illuminated liquor shelves, textured tile and organic shaped lamps hanging above it.

The entrance walkway

The walkway to the main entrance is framed by pillars and lit with geometric hanging lamps. It’s gorgeous, and such a pretty first impression for your guests.

✨Already picturing yourselves on that dock at golden hour? I’d love to hear about your plans. Tell me about your wedding here.

The Light and the Best Time of Year

This venue was absolutely designed with photography and lighting in mind! The bridal suites have plenty of natural light, and the floor to ceiling windows in the ballroom let in plenty of daylight. What impresses me most is the ceremony location. Because the patio faces southwest, you’ll never be standing in harsh sun during your ceremony, which is the worst kind of light for photos, and the sun will never be directly behind you. This angle shows off the golden hour glow behind you and lets me capture the sunset colors reflecting on the lake.

No matter what time of year you get married, you’ll have great ceremony light. A September or October wedding is the sweet spot if you want your ceremony right before sunset. Katerina and Glenn’s ceremony started at 5:00, exactly an hour and a half before sunset, right in golden hour. Their cocktail hour landed during sunset, so their family portraits, wedding party photos and couple portraits all had glowing sunset colors reflecting on the lake behind them.

If you’re getting married in the summer, sunset will be later and happen during your reception. Your guests will get a gorgeous sunset view through the ballroom windows, but you’ll want to sneak back outside with me for sunset photos by the lake. That’s something you do not want to miss at this venue!

Timeline Tips for Your Lakehouse Wedding

Since hair and makeup happen off site and you’ll typically arrive 90 minutes before the ceremony, there isn’t much time for getting-ready photos in the bridal suite if you’re planning any portraits before the ceremony. So plan for getting-ready photos to start at a separate location, like one of the hotels nearby. I usually recommend at least an hour and a half of getting-ready coverage, so there’s time to capture your details and you can be present without feeling rushed.

For Katerina and Glenn, my second photographer and I spent an hour at a hotel with the couple. I captured their detail flatlay, Katerina’s final makeup touches and fun candids with her bridesmaids, while my second photographer was with the groomsmen. Once we got to the venue, we had about 30 minutes for Katerina’s getting-ready bridal portraits before formal photos started.

For that window to work, your bridesmaids, your mom, and anyone helping you into your dress should already be dressed before you arrive at the venue. Waiting for everyone to change will put your timeline behind fast. If everyone else is ready, you can step into your dress as soon as you arrive, take your time, and we’ll have room to create stunning bridal portraits.

And build sunset into your timeline, because sunset is where this venue shines. For a fall wedding, it’s easy to plan your ceremony right before sunset. For a summer wedding, you’ll still have a gorgeous ceremony on the water, but we’ll plan a few minutes to sneak out of your reception for sunset portraits. This is exactly the kind of thing we map out together during our planning calls, when I build your custom photo timeline. You can see how my wedding photography process works here.

Bringing Color to The Lakehouse

Because the venue has a neutral interior with natural decor, it’s a blank canvas, and that means almost any color palette will work beautifully here! On its own, The Lakehouse gives you a modern, clean, minimalist space, and that alone makes for a gorgeous celebration. But if minimalism isn’t your vision, you’ll want to get creative with the space, so keep that in mind when you plan your floral and decor budget.

Katerina and Glenn leaned into fall. The bridesmaids’ bouquets matched the ceremony arrangements, with white, peach and orange florals that complemented the changing leaves around the lake. Their ceremony aisle was lined with orange, yellow and white mums, and white pumpkins accented the altar. Inside, the reception tables were bursting with colorful arrangements of green, red, orange, yellow, peach and white flowers, plus candles and wicker pumpkins filled with twinkle lights.

Working With Saphire Event Group

Saphire Event Group are incredible to work with! They have an in-house event team with a large staff, including event producers and day-of coordinators. At Katerina and Glenn’s wedding, multiple coordinators were on site throughout the day to keep things running smoothly. They suggested locations and helped with the first touch, and they made sure we got the photos the couple cared about most. One of those was a beautiful old-fashioned fire truck that Glenn’s fire chief brought to the wedding. It was what the couple was most excited to take photos with, so we made sure to prioritize it!

The Lakehouse on Film

One of the questions couples ask me most often is, “Do you offer film?” Yes! I shoot both 35mm film and digital, and at Katerina and Glenn’s wedding I used both. I shot film in the bridal suite, during their ceremony on the lake and during their portraits. Here are a few film frames from Katerina and Glenn’s day at The Lakehouse, from getting ready to their ceremony on the water and portraits on the dock.

Whether I’m shooting film or digital, my goal is the same: true to color photos that feel warm, bright and authentic to who you are, and that take you right back to how your day felt every time you look at them.

If you’re dreaming of film for your own wedding, mention it when you inquire and we’ll talk through it on our discovery call.

Who The Lakehouse Is Perfect For

The Lakehouse is perfect for couples who want their day to feel both luxurious and relaxed. It’s for couples who love the outdoors and the calm of being on the lake, and who want a venue that’s easy to get to but still feels like a destination or an escape. If you’re searching for a bright, modern venue with stunning indoor and outdoor spaces that photographs beautifully, and you’re dreaming of filling it with color, this is your place.

If I had to pick one moment that sums up why I loved shooting here, it would be taking photos at sunset on the lake. The sky was incredible, and the light was perfect.
