Heritage Museum and Gardens Engagement | Cape Cod Hydrangea Festival

Heritage Museum and Gardens Engagement

There is nothing that feels more like summer on Cape Cod than a Heritage Museum and Gardens engagement surrounded by blooming hydrangeas. When Julia and Tyler began planning their engagement session, they already knew one detail that would define both their photos and their wedding day. Blue hydrangeas.

Since their wedding would feature blue hydrangeas throughout the décor, they wanted their engagement photos to reflect that same vision. I always love when couples come to me with an idea that is meaningful to them, and together we get to bring it to life.

For Julia, Heritage Museum and Gardens was an especially meaningful location. Growing up, she spent her summers on Cape Cod and visited the gardens often with her family. Returning there for her engagement session felt nostalgic while also creating new memories with Tyler before their wedding.

Why Heritage Museum and Gardens Is One of the Best Cape Cod Engagement Locations

Located in Sandwich, Massachusetts, Heritage Museum and Gardens spans more than 100 acres of beautifully maintained gardens, walking paths, historic buildings, and quiet corners that are perfect for portraits. Every season offers something different, but July is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular times to visit.

During the middle of summer, Cape Cod celebrates the arrival of hydrangea season with the annual Cape Cod Hydrangea Festival. Throughout the region you’ll find garden tours, workshops, art exhibits, and special events celebrating one of Cape Cod’s most iconic flowers.

One of the festival’s most popular destinations is Heritage Museum and Gardens, and for good reason. The gardens are home to the largest collection of hydrangeas in North America.

The collection includes 155 specially cultivated hydrangea varieties, with nearly 60 percent no longer grown anywhere else. In addition, the museum is actively testing more than 240 newer varieties, making it one of the most significant hydrangea collections in the country. The result is an incredible display of color, with blue, purple, pink, and white blooms lining the pathways throughout the gardens.

If you’re dreaming of engagement photos surrounded by hydrangeas, there truly isn’t another location quite like it.

Planning a Heritage Museum and Gardens Engagement Session

If you’re planning a Heritage Museum and Gardens engagement session, a photography permit is required and should be reserved in advance.

Photography is permitted during regular museum hours from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., but private sessions can also be scheduled before or after the gardens close. Morning sessions are available from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m., while evening sessions take place between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m.

For a July Heritage Museum and Garden engagement sessions, I highly recommend an evening permit. Between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m., the gardens are filled with soft golden light that photographs beautifully. After-hours sessions are also much quieter, allowing couples to enjoy the gardens without large crowds in the background.

At the time of writing, photography permits are $130 during museum hours and $350 for after-hours access.

Julia and Tyler’s Cape Cod Hydrangea Festival Engagement

For Julia and Tyler’s Cape Cod Hydrangea Festival engagement, we spent the evening wandering through the gardens, stopping wherever the light and flowers caught our attention. We visited some of the property’s most recognizable landmarks, including the historic windmill, winding garden paths, and colorful seasonal flower beds.

While the gardens were filled with purple coneflowers, daylilies, and wisteria, the hydrangeas were undoubtedly the stars of the session.

Because Julia planned to incorporate blue hydrangeas into her wedding décor, we made sure to capture plenty of portraits surrounded by those classic Cape Cod blooms. These photographs would eventually be used for their save-the-dates, wedding invitations, and displayed throughout their wedding alongside matching floral arrangements.

Their outfits for their Heritage Museum and Garden engagement session couldn’t have complemented the gardens more perfectly. Julia wore a timeless white dress, while Tyler chose a blue suit jacket that echoed the vibrant shades of the hydrangeas around them.

The two primary hydrangea collections are located toward the center of the property, just beyond the outdoor stage. The North American Hydrangea Test Garden showcases many of the newest varieties, offering a wide range of unique colors, while the Cape Cod Hydrangea Society Display Garden features many of the classic blue and white hydrangeas that have become synonymous with Cape Cod summers. Both gardens offer incredible backdrops, each with its own distinct character.

A Ride on the Historic Carousel

We finished the evening with one final stop at one of Heritage Museum and Gardens’ most charming attractions, the historic carousel.

Built by Charles I. D. Looff in 1908, it is one of only ten original Looff carousels still operating in the United States today. Every horse was hand carved with remarkable detail, complete with glass eyes and tails made from real horsehair.

After spending the evening among lush gardens and colorful blooms, ending the session on the carousel added a playful, nostalgic touch that perfectly reflected Julia and Tyler’s personalities. It was the perfect way to close out a summer engagement session that celebrated both their love story and one of Cape Cod’s most beautiful traditions.
