Stretching 3.5 miles along Newport’s shoreline, the Cliff Walk combines dramatic ocean views, rugged rocky cliffs, and the timeless elegance of Newport’s historic Gilded Age mansions. It’s one of the most iconic engagement photo locations in Rhode Island, offering an incredible variety of scenery within a single walk.

Spring Daffodils at 40 Steps

For Lisa and Reid’s Newport Cliff Walk engagement session, we planned their photos for April so we could catch the daffodils in peak bloom. They certainly did not disappoint.

We met at the 40 Steps entrance, one of my favorite access points along the Cliff Walk. It offers easy access to the rocky shoreline while placing you within walking distance of several of Newport’s most beautiful mansions. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by a vibrant patch of blooming daffodils. The cheerful yellow flowers contrasted beautifully against the deep blue Atlantic and the soft pastel colors of the spring sky.

Because the Cliff Walk sits directly on the water, the light becomes especially beautiful just before sunset. Lisa and Reid wandered through the flowers, laughing together as the ocean breeze drifted around them. Surrounded by spring blooms and endless coastal views, they looked as though they had stepped into a painting. Before beginning our walk, we paused to admire the sweeping views of the Atlantic, where the rocky coastline curved into the distance beneath Newport’s famous mansions.

Exploring the Cliff Walk and 40 Steps

One of the highlights of any Newport Cliff Walk engagement is, of course, 40 Steps. This historic stone staircase descends from Narragansett Avenue down toward the rocky shoreline below. Walking down the steps feels as though you’re stepping directly into the ocean. With waves crashing against the rocks below and the salty breeze filling the air, it creates one of the most dramatic portrait locations anywhere along the coast.

Lisa and Reid looked absolutely ethereal against the deep blue water, and the movement of the sea added so much life to their photographs.

A Full Circle Story

As we continued along the Cliff Walk, I had plenty of time to catch up with them. Reid and I actually went to middle school and high school together, although we hadn’t seen each other in years. We unexpectedly reconnected in 2023 when I photographed a friend’s wedding that he happened to be officiating. Then, almost a year later, our paths crossed again while I was photographing another wedding where the couple knew Reid from college. It truly is a small world, so I was thrilled when he reached out about photographing his engagement session.

The timing made the session even more meaningful. Lisa had just finished her final semester of medical school and was preparing to begin her residency in Las Vegas. Together, they were getting ready to leave New England and start an exciting new chapter of their lives.

Newport has always held a special place in their relationship. They first met here and spent countless dates walking through the city together. Choosing the Cliff Walk for their engagement session felt like the perfect way to celebrate where their story began while saying goodbye to the place that had become such an important part of it.

We followed the winding path, taking in the sunset and panoramic ocean views until we arrived at The Chanler at Cliff Walk, one of Newport’s most iconic seaside mansions. Perched above the coastline, the hilltop estate provided a breathtaking backdrop for the next part of Lisa and Reid’s engagement session. Patches of blooming daffodils surrounded the pathways below, adding a touch of whimsy to the mansion’s formal architecture and perfectly complementing the soft colors of the evening sky.

Lisa and Reid danced together on the steps beneath the mansion, laughing the entire time. They were both so bubbly and joyful, and the connection they share is undeniable. The combination of elegant architecture, spring blooms, and the Atlantic just beyond made this one of my favorite moments from their Newport Cliff Walk engagement session.

Sunset Engagement Photos at Ochre Court

While we still had light left in the sky, we turned around and retraced our steps back toward the entrance of the Cliff Walk before making our way to Ochre Court, the second-largest mansion in Newport. Couples that plan an Ochre Court engagement session are often drawn to it’s incredible architecture and rich history. Designed by renowned architect Richard Morris Hunt and modeled after a French château, this Gilded Age estate is now home to Salve Regina University’s administration offices.

For their Ochre Court engagement photos we arrived just as the sun dipped below the horizon, and the sky was painted in soft pastel hues. Even better, we had the entire property to ourselves. Ochre Court is unlike any other mansion in Newport, with its soaring limestone chimneys, elaborate dormers, towering spires, and rows of grand windows. The expansive courtyard features an elegant terrace framed by dramatic archways and intricate balconies, creating an atmosphere that feels both regal and romantic.

The mansion’s striking façade provided the perfect setting for timeless engagement portraits. As the last light of the day faded, Lisa and Reid shared quiet moments together in front of one of Newport’s most breathtaking landmarks. It was the perfect way to end their Ochre Court engagement session and an unforgettable farewell to the city where their love story began.
