As a Boston wedding photographer, creating thoughtful wedding flat lays is one of my favorite parts of the wedding day. It gives me the opportunity to slow down, get creative, and design images that reflect your style while documenting all of the little details that might otherwise be forgotten. With a little planning before your wedding day, your detail photos can become some of the most beautiful images in your gallery.

Have Your Wedding Details Ready Before Your Photographer Arrives

One of my biggest wedding flat lay tips is to have everything gathered before your photographer arrives. Detail photos are typically captured while hair and makeup is finishing, making it the perfect time to photograph all of the meaningful pieces from your wedding day without interrupting the rest of your timeline.

Rather than leaving the hair and makeup chair to search through bags and boxes, place everything you’d like photographed together in one location before the day begins. This allows your photographer to get started immediately while you relax and enjoy the morning with your favorite people.

What Details Should Be Included in Your Wedding Flat Lay?

When deciding what to include, think about every piece that came together to tell the story of your wedding day. Your wedding flat lay should showcase not only beautiful objects, but meaningful ones as well.

Some of my favorite details to photograph include your wedding rings, complete invitation suite including the save the date, invitation, RSVP card, details card, program, and outer envelope, vow books, jewelry, shoes, veil, accessories, perfume, memorial pins, something borrowed, something blue, flowers, guest favors, and pieces of your reception decor.

Don’t forget about the groom’s details. Items like cuff links, a watch, tie, shoes, belt, boutonnière, cologne, and meaningful family heirlooms deserve their own moment in your gallery too.

These photographs become a visual time capsule of everything that made your wedding day uniquely yours.

The More Details You Include, the More Creative Your Photographer Can Be

Another wedding flat lay tip is more details create more possibilities. A photographer can certainly create beautiful images with just a few items, but having a larger collection of meaningful details allows for more variety and creativity throughout your gallery.

I always bring a carefully curated styling kit to every wedding. It includes ring boxes in a variety of colors and shapes, ribbons, styling mats, vintage stamps, wax seals, stacking blocks for creating depth with paper goods, and other styling pieces that help elevate your detail photographs. These pieces are used to complement your wedding design while keeping the focus on your personal details.

Include Personal Touches That Tell Your Story

Some of my favorite wedding flat lays include items that aren’t traditionally thought of as wedding details.

Family heirlooms, vintage jewelry, old family wedding photographs, handwritten letters, Polaroids or Photo Booth photos of the two of you, and sentimental keepsakes instantly make your detail photos feel more personal. These pieces add emotion and tell a deeper story about your relationship and your family history.

I also love incorporating your venue into your detail photographs whenever possible. Rather than photographing every flat lay on a styling mat, I may use beautiful furniture, architectural details, stonework, or other interesting spaces around your venue to create images that feel connected to your wedding location.

Flowers Make Every Wedding Flat Lay Better

If I could give only one wedding flat lay tip, it would be this. Flowers make everything better.

A few extra blooms instantly add color, texture, movement, and dimension to your detail photographs. They help tie your flat lays into the rest of your wedding design while making every image feel lush and complete.

Ask your florist ahead of time if they can include a handful of extra blooms or floral clippings that coordinate with your bouquets and floral installations. Ideally, these flowers should be delivered to your getting ready location along with your bouquets so they’re available when your photographer begins styling your details.

If your florist isn’t able to deliver extra flowers in time, you can always purchase a few loose blooms ahead of your wedding that match your floral color palette. Even just a few stems can make a dramatic difference.

Create Time For Details In Your Wedding Timeline

Beautiful wedding flat lays take time to create. Every invitation is carefully arranged, ribbons are styled, rings are placed thoughtfully, and each composition is adjusted until everything feels balanced.

I recommend allowing at least 20 to 30 minutes in your wedding timeline for detail photographs. This is usually scheduled while hair and makeup is wrapping up, making it an efficient use of time without taking away from portraits or other important moments later in the day.

Whenever possible, I like to arrive a little early so I can slow down before the excitement of the day begins. Creating detail photographs allows me to settle into a creative mindset while documenting all of the beautiful pieces you’ve spent months planning.
