Vikas & Heta’s Boston Public Library Surprise Proposal

Vikas reached out to me months in advance to help plan his dream Boston Public Library proposal. They would be visiting Boston from Chicago in September. He was immediately drawn to the library’s breathtaking architecture, and the location became even more meaningful knowing that Heta is an avid reader. Choosing the Boston Public Library felt incredibly personal and intentional for their story.

The proposal took place in the historic McKim Building in Copley Square. After scouting the library in person and sending Vikas photos of the many stunning locations throughout the space, he knew right away that Bates Hall was where he wanted to propose. With its soaring barrel-vaulted ceiling, long oak tables, and iconic emerald green reading lamps, Bates Hall is truly one of the most magical rooms in Boston.

The Boston Public Library events team played a huge role in bringing this surprise proposal to life. I arrived early to get into position on the opposite side of the hall, using a zoom lens to capture the moment discreetly. An hour before opening, the couple arrived under the guise of a private tour. As the events coordinator guided them through the library and up to Bates Hall, Heta had no idea what was about to happen.

As they stood in the center of the hall, taking in the grandeur of the space, Vikas led Heta forward and got down on one knee. Her reaction was pure magic, completely surprised, emotional, and full of joy. It was one of those moments that reminds me why I love photographing proposals so much.

A Boston Public Library Engagement Session to Remember

After taking a few moments to soak it all in, the events coordinator congratulated the newly engaged couple and revealed the final surprise: there was no tour at all. Instead, they had the entire library completely to themselves for portraits. This is what makes a Boston Public Library Engagement Session so incredibly special.

With only an hour and so many stunning locations to choose from, we carefully mapped out our time to make the most of the experience. We began in Bates Hall, where the proposal took place, capturing wide shots that showcased the scale and grandeur of the room. Vikas and Heta wandered among the long wooden tables, cozying up by the bookshelves—a perfect nod to Heta’s love for reading.

Next, we made our way to the grand marble staircase, the Boston Public Library’s most iconic feature. Located at the main entrance, the staircase connects the lobby to the upper floors and is made of yellow Siena marble and ivory-gray Échaillon steps embedded with fossils. Bathed in natural light from towering windows, the staircase is surrounded by murals by French artist Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, depicting the Spirit of Light, and flanked by two impressive lion statues. We frolicked in the hallways above and wandered up and down the staircase. I wanted to capture all the romantic, joyful moments as the couple soaked in all the gilded grandeur.

We concluded the session in the library’s famous courtyard, a peaceful oasis tucked away from the bustle of the city. Designed in a beautiful Italian Renaissance style, the courtyard features a sculpted fountain, manicured greenery, and arched walkways completely enclosed by the library itself. Vikas and Heta strolled the paths, cuddled under the archways, and shared a quiet moment at a quaint reading table. This Boston Public Library proposal truly couldn’t have been any sweeter.
